As to the Professorship, 1 adhere to the
views expressed on 36242. It would, ever, perhaps
be politic to defer to the Gov. and the Unofficials
salary
-
to the extent of allowing some contribution to the
especially as Lord Crewe encouraged the idea,
according to the Gov. 's desp., 36242. I would therefore
agree to 6,000 dollars a year, having regard to the
saving of 2,500 dollars a year on the vote for the
College of Medicine.
But, the S. of S. may prefer to avoid friction and
whole
let the Vote pass as Mr. Stubbs proposes. After all,

it is no great matter.
The fact that the Imperial Grant as compensation
for loss of opium revenue exceeds half the direct loss
is a little awkward, as it affords some logical basis
(according to the present absurd system of computation )
for the demand of Mail. Cont. on the Grant. It is clear,
however, that as the three Grants given or promised
were fixed sums, and as we made no reservation in a0-
nouncing these sums to the Colony, we cannot ask for
Mil. Contr. except in connexion with possible future
grants this is the line we have taken in replying to
the Treas. Let us hope that they won't find out that
at present the Grant exceeds one half the loss.
The immediate outlook in H.K. is more favourable
